Environmental stewardship is a priority to the Metro District. That’s why we
have developed systems to conserve water in parks and
on parkway landscaping. Read on to learn how the Metro District takes a
responsible approach to managing our water consumption.
-
We monitor five local weather
stations and make frequent changes based on current conditions. Our staff
maintains
sprinkler systems on 440 acres of park and parkway landscape. That’s
an area equal to about 5,600 home landscapes. Virtually all of this area
is centrally controlled by a computer/radio network which contains 61 sprinkler
timers that control more than 47,000 sprinkler heads. This entire system
can be shut off within minutes when it starts to rain. That means that we
won’t waste water by running our sprinklers in the rain.
-
We operate under the same water
budget as residential customers - 27 inches of water for landscape use.
-
Park and parkway landscape uses
less than 10 percent of the community’s annual use.
-
We’re doing our part to help
the community conserve water by providing technical assistance to homeowners associations
and commercial property owners.
-
Redstone Park, our largest community
and sports complex, uses raw water or treated effluent (gray water) for its sprinkler
water.
-
Our sprinkler technicians have
135 years of experience. Four of our technicians are certified as
water auditors by the Irrigation Association.
How you can help
As with any
technology, sometimes our computer system can malfunction. If you see a
sprinkler in a Highlands Ranch park or along a parkway running when it’s
raining, or if you see a sprinkler spouting like a geyser, please give us a call
at 303-791-0227.
