Little Nature Explorers
These programs are designed with the little ones in mind! Your child will learn about nature through stories, hands-on activities, nature walks, and crafts. Children ages three through five must be accompanied by a parent. A snack will be provided. Dress appropriately for outdoor activities.
Class maximum: 15
All classes will be held at the Metro District Parks, Recreation & Open Space Service Center, 3280 Redstone Park Circle.

Snowflakes
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. Each snowflake is unique, but where does snow come from? Did you know that no two snowflakes are alike? Little ones will play fun games and make a snowflake craft to take home. If we’re lucky, maybe it will even snow on this day!

Footprints in the snow! Do you wonder what animal left a track behind? Learn how to identify tracks and make your own tracking book to take home!

Senior Stroll Along the High Line Canal!
This program is designed for seniors interested in learning about the history, and the various critters who call the High Line Canal Trail home -- or who just want to get outside and enjoy the great outdoors. You can tune the Park Ranger out! This one-hour walk is ideal for those who want to experience our community’s natural areas without the concern of physical limitations. Participants will enjoy a leisurely stroll on a flat, easy trail. Participants in wheelchairs or who need walking aids are welcome.

Full Moon Snowshoe – All Ages
Strap on your snowshoes and experience the winter wonders of Highlands Ranch, accompanied by the light of the moon! Find out what wild critters are prowling the ranch when the moon is full! Families are welcome! If we are not blessed with snow, let’s bundle up and go for a hike anyway!

How do animals pair up? What attracts an animal to its mate? Learn different courting rituals of animals in Highlands Ranch just in time for Valentine’s Day!

Cunning Coyotes - Ages 7 and older
Coyotes take up residence all over Colorado and even make their own homes here in Highlands Ranch. Discover what coyotes eat, where they den, and how they communicate. Listen to various yips, howls, and barks. Explore the open space with a Metro District Park Ranger, look for signs of a coyote and possibly see a coyote. Find out how to share their space and what to do if you’re approached by a coyote on the trail.

Ick! That’s Gross! - Ages 6 and older
Did you know that Turkey Vultures poop on their own legs? Did you know that American Robins carry poop in their mouths? Find out why this gross stuff is helpful to wild animals and the reasons why these critters behave like they do. Take a walk with a Metro District Park Ranger through the open space to look for some of these yucky things!

Hunter Safety/
Education Class
The primary purpose of this course is to teach proper gun handling in circumstances related to hunting. However, more than that, it offers the opportunity for a youngster or adult to become familiar with the fundamentals of firearms handling and firearms safety while, at the same time, opening the possibility of an interesting and challenging hobby.
The course includes a minimum of 10 hours of classroom instruction and firing a firearm. This course covers hunter responsibility, hunting laws and regulations, survival and first aid, primitive hunting (archery and muzzle loading), wildlife identification and field care of game, firearms actions and functioning, and safe gun handling. Students must past a written examination and complete qualification shooting with a .22 cal. rifle.
Classroom sessions will be held at the Parks, Recreation & Open Space Service

Earn your badges with the Metro District’s parks and recreation staff. The Highlands Ranch Metro District offers a number of programs in which Scouts may earn a badge. Classes are also open to groups in addition to Scouts. Don’t see a particular badge listed? Give us a call with details, and we’ll create a program to fit your troop’s needs. The Metro District has created the Healthy Steps program to get you on the
trail to a more active lifestyle. Register now and you will receive a
pedometer, log book, walking suggestions, and a Highlands Ranch Outdoor Guide
that shows all of the great trails and parks where you can get your steps.
