These programs are designed with the little ones in mind! Your child will learn about nature through stories, hands-on activities, nature walks, and crafts. Children ages three through five must be accompanied by a parent. A snack will be provided. Dress appropriately for outdoor activities. Class limit: 15

Guided Bird Walk
Is that a Buteo or an Accipitor soaring above? Find out the answer on a bird walk guided by a Metro District Park Ranger. Touch a preserved Kestrel wing and an owl talon. Let the Metro District Park Rangers’ expertise assist you in your quest to seek and identify the birds that call our open space home! You might see a Black-crowned Night-heron or even nesting Red-tail Hawks! Bring your binoculars and bird guides if you have them. All ability levels are welcomed and encouraged!

Pack Rat Turns Resourceful
What do you do with all of your junk mail, newspapers, shoeboxes and old cards? Join a Metro District Park Ranger and discover how to turn this junk into fresh and innovative items that you can utilize yourself or give away as gifts! In this class you will gain the knowledge to create custom clip-and-snip cards, crazy quilt boxes, gift bags, and more from ordinary things you’d consider trash or recyclables.

The Complete Fly Fisher
Join us for our most popular program - an introduction to fly-fishing. Learn about fly fishing equipment, beginner casting techniques, stream insect identification, and reading the water. This is a hands-on clinic for individuals and families ranging from inexperienced to beginner. If you have your own equipment, bring it along. If not, equipment will be provided upon request. Class will meet at Kistler Park.

Signs Left Behind! Ages (10 & Older)
Whose track is that? Critters leave many signs behind for us to discover. Become familiar with urban animal tracks and go for a short hike to look for other animal evidence. Make your own tracking guide to use on other hikes. Dress appropriately for outdoor activities.

Introduction to Fishing
Learn to fish at this event, held in cooperation with the Colorado Muskies. People of all ages will learn to bait, cast, tie knots, reel ‘em in and unhook the catch. The first 100 people to sign up will receive a free rod when attending this class!

7th Annual Kids’ Fishing Day at Redstone Park Pond
Redstone Park features a one-acre pond stocked with perch, bass, trout and bluegill. The Metro District, Colorado Muskies, and Wal-Mart
invite anglers age five to 14 to join members of the Colorado Muskies for the seventh annual event, where we will reel in the big ones. This is a free event, however registration is limited.
Register at the Highlands Ranch Wal-Mart Sporting Goods department after Friday, May 9 to receive an official fishing day t-shirt.
Saturday, May 31 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Redstone Park Pond
Hunter Safety/Education Class
The primary purpose of the course is to teach proper gun handling in circumstances related to hunting. However, beyond that, it offers the opportunity for a youngster or adult to become familiar with the fundamentals of firearms handling and firearms safety while, at the same time, opening the possibility of an interesting and challenging hobby.
The course includes a minimum of 10 hours of classroom instruction and the firing of a firearm. Students must pass a written examination and complete qualification shooting with a .22 caliber rifle. Classes will be held at the Metro District Parks, Recreation, & Open Space Service Center for classroom work and then will meet at the Colorado Division of Wildlife shooting range for testing. Registration will be accepted through Monday, March 24, or until the class is full.
Fee: $10, which includes manuals and ammunition. Firearms, targets, and all safety equipment are provided by the instructor. Classes are open to any student (ages 10 and older). Parents are also encouraged to attend. Class size is limited to 40 students.
