Get
Out, Get Moving!
A community initiative.
The national and local media
have frequently covered the obesity crisis in America over recent months. The
Secretary of Health and Human Services and the United States Surgeon General have
positioned the issue at the forefront of their agendas. A new public service campaign
has been initiated to make Americans aware of the dangers of inactivity and obesity.
The disturbing statistics
show that more than 300,000 deaths each year can be attributed to obesity, and
a recent study revealed that obesity may overtake tobacco as a leading cause of
death in the country. It is estimated that 34 percent of adults are considered
overweight, and an additional 31 percent are obese. Perhaps more startling is
that 15 percent of children ages six to 19, and 10 percent of those age two to
five are considered severely overweight. Although Colorado is considered one of
the healthiest states, our childhood obesity percentages are the same as the national
average. Many health groups blame a lack of knowledge about nutrition and lifestyles
that lead to quick meals and long hours indoors.
The good news is that this
disease is preventable. As stated by United States Surgeon General, Richard H.
Carmona, "The fundamental reason our children are overweight is this - too many
children are eating too much and moving too little. Kids need to spend more time
on the playground and less time on the PlayStation."
So what can we do as a community
to help combat this disease and encourage active lifestyles? Partner with the
Metro Districts to increase your level of physical activity. We'll show you how
to Get Out, Get Moving! by providing an avenue for an active lifestyle
through a variety of programs and services.
One option is to join our
Healthy Steps Program, where you will receive a pedometer, a map of the Highlands
Ranch trail system and a walking log. Another way to Get Out, Get Moving!
is to plan some time with your family in the parks or playgrounds, on the trails
or in the outdoor recreation programs offered by the Metro Districts. Play softball,
flag football or tennis; enroll your child in a sports camp; take skateboard lessons,
or join one of the hikes and bird walks offered through our outdoor education
programs. These are just a few ways that make it easy to get the 30 minutes of
moderate exercise each day that can make a difference in our health.
The Metro District will
bring the Get Out, Get Moving! message to all of our events and programs.
Look for us at the upcoming Parties at the Park - Backyard Learning Experience
events, youth and adult sports programs and special events. In the meantime, Get
Out, Get Moving!
