Capital Improvements & Management Activities
The Metro District's Public Works Department is responsible for:

  • Construction of major pipe systems, culverts and regional detention ponds.
  • Management of stormwater facilities in open space corridors.
  • Manage and maintain the drainageways in the natural open space areas.  This is accomplished through the Metro District's channel stabilization program which is funded by the stormwater fee.

These activities are closely coordinated internally with Metro District's Parks & Open Space staff and externally with regional organizations like the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UDFCD), Douglas County Engineering and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USCOE).

2011 Projects
Currently, work is occurring in Marcy Gulch north of Town Center Drive. This project involves the stabilization of more than 2,700 feet of channel, and the reconstruction of the Highline Canal Trail crossing. This is a cooperative project between Douglas County, UDFCD, Denver Water, the Highlands Ranch Golf Club and the Metro District.

The Metro District and Centennial Water & Sanitation District are also partners in a project in Marcy Gulch in Chatfield State Park. The project involves rebuilding the Centennial Trail crossing and channel improvements in Marcy Gulch.

A major storm sewer system, pipe 51, is being constructed on the south side of County Line Road, west of Lucent Blvd.

Work on the drainage area at the future site of the Fly'n B Park was completed in January in conjunction with the park improvements.

Minor drainage improvements are being constructed as part of the Dad Clark Trail Crossing between Toepfer Park and the Tresana development.

Flood Control
The Metro District cooperates with Douglas County and the Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (UDFCD) to build and manage flood control ponds in the community. Through a system of regional stormwater detention ponds and open space drainage ways, all commercial and residential properties in the community are located outside the 100 year flood plain, per Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) criteria.

Flood plain maps and release letters may be obtained by contacting the Douglas County Building Division at 303-660-7497, or at http://www.douglas.co.us/Departments.html.
