The Highlands Ranch Metro District is committed to fostering and promoting responsible environmental stewardship in the community.

What We’re Doing to Conserve Resources

  • Our fleet includes two hybrid vehicles.
  • A no idle policy requires staff to turn off their vehicles when not being driven.
  • All mulch generated by the Forestry section is used in parks and parkway landscaping or given away free to homeowners.
  • Waterless urinals are used at Civic Green Park.
  • Solar-powered time locks and skylights are used in park restrooms.
  • Organic waste bins placed at community gardens keep waste out of the landfill.
  • A fence replacement program replaces aging parkway fence with new Trex fence made of 50 percent recycled and reclaimed plastic and 50 percent reclaimed wood.
  • Reuse water is used to irrigate grass at Redstone Park.
  • The Metro District’s watering strategy helps conserve water used for outdoor irrigation.
  • Dog waste bag dispensers are stocked with biodegradeable bags.
  • We plan to plant about 225 trees per year during our seven-year tree replacement plan from 2024-2030.

Helping You Go Green

The Metro District hosts a variety of events and programming to promote environmental stewardship in the community. These include:

  • Tree and limb recycling
  • Christmas tree recycling
  • Nature EdVentures programs
  • Rain sensor rebates (links to Highlands Ranch Water)
  • Renew the Ranch parks and open space clean-up events
  • Arbor Day tree planting volunteer activities

Yard Waste Composting and Tree Recycling Drop-Off

 

With the arrival of fall, it’s time to prune trees and shrubs, rake leaves and clean up your garden beds. Our one-day drop-off event will be in the center parking lot of Redstone Park, 3280 Redstone Park Circle, and is free to all Highlands Ranch residents.

Separate lanes will be available to drop yard waste and tree limbs.

A graphic illustrating that loose tree limbs and yard waste in paper bags are acceptable for drop-off. Yard waste in plastic bags will not be accepted.

Yard waste:

Accepted items:

  • grass clippings
  • garden waste, weeds and brush
  • pine cones and pine needles
  • leaves

Loose material will not be accepted. Please use paper yard waste bags or reusable containers to transport your items. We discourage bagging yard waste in plastic bags due to the environmental impact and fact that they take longer to empty into our drop-off bins.

Tree limbs:

Accepted items:

  • tree limbs less than 12 inches in diameter
  • woody plant materials

We cannot accept finished lumber or root balls.

Free mulch will be available to residents on a self-serve basis.  No contractors. For questions, please call 303-791-2710.
