Select areas of Metro District irrigation will be turned on early

Doing so will allow staff to strategically water areas in need & make seasonal repairs
Post Date:02/23/2026 8:35 a.m.

To address unusually dry conditions and begin seasonal system maintenance, the Metro District will begin turning on some areas of irrigation in our parks and parkways. This early activation will help staff strategically water areas in need and identify any necessary repairs. Residents may notice some portions of sprinklers running, but it's important to know irrigation will not be widespread or running on regular programs.

In our parks, irrigation efforts will focus on sports fields to ensure play surfaces remain healthy and safe. Along our parkways, attention will be given to newer landscaping projects and areas that have been significantly impacted by recent utility work.

Depending on the weather, our irrigation systems are typically fully energized and regularly programmed beginning some time between April to June.

Homeowners shouldn't be tempted to turn on their sprinklers at this point in the year because sudden freezes can result in damaged pipes and valves. However, supplemental watering with a hose can help trees, shrubs and other landscaping stay healthy and ready for spring growth. Our partners at Highlands Ranch Water suggest watering by hand or with a hose end sprinkler attachment. They suggest watering slowly and deeply once every two weeks during extended dry periods when air temperatures are above 40 degrees with no snow cover. Learn more at highlandsranchwater.org.
